Getting Your Dog Ready for Winter

Can you believe winter is just around the corner? As you’re bringing out your winter clothes and gear, you’ll want to take some time to make sure your canine buddy is ready for the cold weather as well. Below, a Livonia, MI vet discusses getting Fido ready for wintertime.

Fido’s Winter Clothes

Dogs with thin fur may need a bit of extra protection against the cold. If your pooch wears winter clothes, take time now to make sure Fido’s winter clothes are clean and in good condition, and still fit well. If your pooch has gained weight, and his clothes are a bit too snug, replace them.

Doghouse

Even if Fido only spends short periods of time in the yard, he’ll still need a place to retreat from the weather. If your pooch has a doghouse, give it a good cleaning before the weather gets cold. Make sure it is properly insulated, and is raised up off the ground a little bit.

Exercise

Once the weather gets cold, you may find yourself wanting to keep your dog’s walks short and sweet. Take time now, while the weather is still nice, to indulge your pooch with a fun hike or a trip to a dog park. When it starts getting cold, you may want to vary your dog’s exercise regime a bit to keep him more active when he’s indoors. Use games like fetch to keep Fido from turning into a couch potato.

Diet

Some dogs need more calories in winter. Puppies, senior dogs, and dogs that work or spend a lot of time outdoors may need extra calories. Ask your vet for specific recommendations, including portion control.

Bedding

We all know how nice a warm comfy bed is on cold nights. Make sure your canine buddy has a nice, cozy bed of his own. If your pooch is a senior, consider getting him an orthopedic bed. Add some soft blankets to make it even more inviting.

Grooming

Fall is one of the peak shedding times. Brushing Fido regularly will trap that dead fur in the brush, so you don’t find as much of it stuck to your clothing or furniture. We also recommend giving your canine pal a really good bath before the thermostat drops.
